New Scheduling Guidance

In this installment of our series on the new Guide to Inventorying, Scheduling, and Disposition of Federal Records (ISD) we want to highlight two new guides for scheduling records.

Best Practices for Role-Based Scheduling: Role-based scheduling is where the position or role of an individual is a factor in determining the disposition of records. The Capstone approach to managing email and other electronic messages (GRS 6.1) is a role-based scheduling approach, but it is not the only role-based way to schedule records. Agencies have been using role-based scheduling for senior level officials for decades. The guide explains the different ways agencies might use role-based scheduling. However, do not expect to use role-based scheduling for all of your agency’s records.

Guide to Machine-Implementable Disposition Instructions: Machine-implementable disposition instructions allow a computer application to implement record disposition. Systems can automate disposition either by automatically disposing of records or by notifying a records manager that records are eligible for destruction or transfer to NARA. This guide provides instructions on how to write machine-implementable disposition instructions and how to convert disposition instructions into a format that computers can understand.

If you have any questions, please contact your agency’s assigned appraiser.
